Single A Division (A) (Ages 4-6 by May 1st)
Overview
The 14th Ward Single A Division is the best program in Pittsburgh to introduce kids ages 4-6 years-old to the fundamentals of baseball in a fun and safe environment. Our program teaches basic skills and concepts in each aspect of the game – fielding, throwing, hitting and baserunning – through a 75-90 minute session once per week. The first part of the session is dedicated to practice drills on basic skills. In the second half, teams pair up for a short 1-3 inning "game." We encourage kids to try to hit coach-pitch, and use a tee if needed or preferred. Everyone hits and plays in the field every inning.
Season Schedule

Equipment
Players must have their own...
Players are strongly encouraged to have the following (however, if they do not have their own the league will provide them):
- See the Dick's Sporting Goods Baseball Bat Buying Guide for more info. Pay particular attention to recommendations on identifying the appropriate weight and length.
- Bats marked "T-ball" are frequently a good fit for players in Single A but not required.
- Note that in higher levels of play (Double A, Triple A and Majors), only bats stamped with "USA Baseball" are allowed.
- Do not spend a lot of money on a bat at this level. Anything they can use for practice at home will be fine.
- Helmets - Any baseball or softball helmet that fits and is not cracked will suffice.
Other Equipment (FYI):
- Baseballs will be provided by the league for practices and games. Softer, safety balls marked "Official T-Balls" (or similar) are used for this program.
- Athletic/protective cups and supporter (jock strap) for those players identifying as male - while not required for Single A it will be required at higher levels. Some parents choose to equip their players with cups from their first days to get them used to wearing them.
- Face masks - some players benefit from wearing a face mask on their helmets and/or in the field not just for the extra level of safety but also because it reduces fear of being hit with a ball and enables them to keep their head in on a pitch and/or throw.
- Chest protector/heart guards - players at higher levels frequently wear an undershirt with a padded chest area as another layer of protection and to guard against the rare but serious condition of In levels/tournaments where certain players (typically pitchers) are required to wear a heard guard they will be provided by the team/league.
Uniforms
- Players will be provided with a jersey and hat.
- Baseball pants are not required. However, long pants are strongly encouraged.
- Baseball shoes (cleats) are recommended to avoid slipping and prevent water from wet grass soaking through sneakers. However, many players wear sneakers and are fine.
